Meta is set to launch the Threads app today on Apple’s App Store but not Google Play in the UK or the US.
Meta describes Threads as a “text-based conversation app” where thread-like posts can be made on the app, enabling people to have conversations about topics of interest and share their points of view.
The App Store’s description reads as follows: “Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.”
Mark Zuckerburg has a habit of taking successful ideas from other social media companies and creates new features and/or products to try and take advantage. He did this with Instagram “stories” and disappearing posts mirroring features from Snapchat and “reels” under Facebook to allow for sharing of short-form videos mirroring Tik-Tok. Threads is a continuation of this trend, this time against Twitter.
With the recent public backlash against Twitter policies that are pushing further monetization of the platform and already existing backlash with its management, this looks to be a prime time to release this product for Meta.
Meta has said that the new app will be linked with Instagram, a popular social media site also owned by Meta and will be available in over 31 different languages.
The new Meta app Threads is expected to be available tonight and at this time is free to download. There is no word, as of yet, on whether there are any additional costs in using it.
